Keeping Your Cat Hydrated: Simple Tips for Pet Owners

As a cat owner, you’ve probably noticed that your feline friend has unique preferences when it comes to food and water. While cats are generally not big drinkers, maintaining proper hydration is crucial for their health. Even though they may not seem to need as much water as other pets, their water intake plays an important role in their kidney function, digestion, and overall well-being.

Cats are descended from desert animals and have evolved to drink less, but it’s still important to encourage regular hydration. Since cats are not efficient drinkers, they only take in a small amount of water with each lap, so offering them enticing and accessible water sources is key.

Recognising the Signs of Dehydration in Cats

Cats can become dehydrated for several reasons, from a lack of water intake to underlying health issues. Common signs of dehydration include:

  • Dry gums
  • Unusual lethargy
  • Reduced appetite
  • Decreased skin elasticity
  • Increased heart rate

To check for dehydration, you can perform the “skin tent” test. Gently pull up the skin on your cat’s shoulders or back. If the skin stays lifted or returns to normal slowly, your cat may be dehydrated. If you suspect dehydration, it’s essential to schedule a vet appointment as soon as possible to address the issue.

How Much Water Should Cats Drink Daily?

A cat’s water needs depend largely on their diet. Wet food, which contains a high water content, reduces their need to drink from a bowl. However, cats on dry food will require more water to stay hydrated. As a general rule, a cat should drink about 50ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. If your cat starts drinking significantly more than this, it could indicate a health problem, such as diabetes or kidney disease, and you should contact your vet for advice.

Tips to Help Your Cat Drink More Water

Encouraging your cat to drink more water can be simple with the right strategies. Here are five tips to keep your cat hydrated:

  1. Opt for a Wide, Shallow Bowl: Cats prefer bowls that allow them to drink without their whiskers touching the sides. Some cats even like drinking from glasses or mugs.

  2. Place the Water in a Quiet Area: Cats like to drink in calm, undisturbed spaces. Make sure their water bowl is placed in a location where they feel secure.

  3. Separate Water from Food: Many cats prefer to have their water away from their food, as it keeps the water fresher and more appealing. Try having multiple water bowls around the house.

  4. Clean Water Daily: Cats are more likely to drink fresh, clean water. Refill their bowl with fresh water every day, and clean the bowl regularly to remove any debris.

  5. Consider a Water Fountain: Cats are often drawn to running water. A water fountain can provide a continuous flow of fresh water, encouraging your cat to drink more.

What If Your Cat Drinks Very Little?

Cats that eat primarily wet food may naturally drink less water, as wet food already contains about 70% water. Additionally, cats have evolved to conserve water well, so it’s normal for them to drink less than other pets. If your cat has a health issue like kidney disease, adding water to their food can help support their hydration needs.

Ensuring your cat stays hydrated is an important part of keeping them healthy. Keep their water fresh and accessible, and if you notice any changes in their drinking habits, reach out to your vet for guidance.
